Chat vs Cowork vs Code Artifacts: What's the Difference?
Claude artifacts now exist in three places, Chat, Cowork and Claude Code, and they look almost identical but behave differently. In short: Chat artifacts are snapshots best for documents and diagrams, Cowork artifacts are live tools that pull and write back to your data, and Code artifacts are prototypes you publish as a web page. They will probably converge, but today they are properly different products, and picking the wrong one is the most common artifacts mistake. This guide explains the difference and which one to use.
If you've read what Claude artifacts are, this is the next question, and the one people search for most: a chat artifact vs a cowork artifact, and where Code fits. The honest starting point is that even the differences aren't well documented, because Claude ships features faster than it writes them up, so this is the practitioner's version.
The short answer
Chat artifacts are the original version. Best for documents, diagrams and quick mock-ups. They work on a snapshot of data, not a live feed, and they're available on every plan.
Cowork artifacts are the most powerful. They connect to your live data, refresh it, and can write back to your tools. Best for dashboards, reports and internal apps. They need a Pro plan and code execution turned on.
Code artifacts are the newest. Best for rapidly prototyping something and sharing it as a web page. They need a Team plan.
The differences that actually matter
Chat artifacts | Cowork artifacts | Code artifacts | |
|---|---|---|---|
Best for | Documents, diagrams, quick mock-ups | Live dashboards, reports, internal apps | Prototypes shared as a web page |
Live data from connectors | Snapshot only | Yes, live refresh | Newer, not as clean yet |
Local files as a source | No | Yes | Yes |
Write back to your tools | No | Yes | Limited |
Sharing | Basic | Within your organisation | Public web page (link) |
Plan needed | All plans | Pro + code execution on | Team |
The two rows that decide most choices are live data and write-back. A Chat artifact can pull data once and draw you a chart, but it's a snapshot, and it can't act. A Cowork artifact connects to your tools, refreshes each time it loads, and can write changes back, which is what turns it from a picture into a tool. That's the line Alex Kantjas draws in our workshop.

Chat artifacts: the original
Artifacts started life in Claude chat in 2024, as Anthropic's answer to ChatGPT's Canvas: a way to generate a web page or a document that persists in the conversation rather than scrolling away. They're still the right tool for anything that doesn't need live data, a document, a flowchart, a quick interactive mock-up, and they work on every plan. The catch is that chat can't see your local files and can't hold a live connection to your tools, so anything it builds from your data is a one-time snapshot.
Cowork artifacts: the powerful one
Cowork artifacts, which Anthropic calls live artifacts, are where the value is for most business users. Because Cowork can hold a live connection to your connectors, an artifact built here refreshes its data every time it opens, and it can write back to your systems, updating a record, creating a task, booking a meeting. That combination, a custom interface, live data, and actions, is what lets you build a real internal tool on top of the software you already use. You need a Pro plan and code execution enabled, because Claude writes the code that runs the interface. If you build one artifact from this whole topic, build a Cowork live artifact.
Code artifacts: prototype and publish
Artifacts came to Claude Code most recently, and the use case is different again: rapid prototyping and sharing. Build a quick page or a concept, and you can share it as a standalone web page that anyone with the link can open, without handing over any files or code to run. It's less about internal tooling and more about getting a working prototype in front of people fast. Because it launched last, expect it to gain the live-refresh behaviour Cowork has, but for now it's the sharing-a-prototype option.
Artifacts vs Projects: not the same thing
A related search worth clearing up: artifacts are not Projects. A Project is a workspace, a container that holds related chats, custom instructions and reference files so Claude keeps context across conversations. An artifact is a single thing Claude builds inside one session, the dashboard or document itself. You might build an artifact while working inside a Project, but they solve different problems: a Project organises your work, an artifact is a piece of that work you can use and share.
Which should you use?
If you need a document, a diagram or a quick mock-up, a Chat artifact is fine and works on any plan. If you want a live dashboard, a report or an internal tool that reads and writes your real data, use a Cowork artifact, it's the most capable and the right default for business work. If you just want to prototype something and share it as a link, reach for a Code artifact. For the wider question of when to use each Claude surface at all, our Claude Chat vs Cowork vs Code guide covers the products themselves.
The bottom line
Chat, Cowork and Code artifacts look the same and aren't. Chat is snapshots for documents and diagrams on any plan; Cowork is live, write-capable tools on your own data, and the best choice for business work; Code is prototypes you publish as a web page. They'll likely converge, but today the difference between a snapshot and a live, write-back artifact is the one that decides which you should build.
If you want your team building the powerful kind properly, our hands-on Claude Cowork training takes people from their first artifact to live tools that run the work.
Common questions
What's the difference between a chat artifact and a cowork artifact? A chat artifact works on a snapshot and can't act; a Cowork artifact holds a live connection to your tools, refreshes its data, and can write back to them. Chat is best for documents and diagrams, Cowork for live dashboards and internal tools.
Which Claude artifact is best for a live dashboard? A Cowork artifact. It's the only one that pulls live data from your connectors and refreshes it, and it can write changes back to your systems.
Are Claude artifacts the same as Projects? No. A Project is a workspace that holds chats, instructions and files for context; an artifact is a single output Claude builds in a session. You can build artifacts inside a Project, but they're different features.
Do I need a paid plan for artifacts? Chat artifacts work on every plan. Cowork artifacts need a Pro plan with code execution enabled. Code artifacts need a Team plan.
