Claude for Slack comes in three forms, and they do different jobs. Every Claude Slack integration points one of two ways.

The first is Claude working inside Slack, where you talk to it in channels and threads and it does the work there. This is Claude Tag and the Claude in Slack app.

The second is Claude reaching into Slack from another Claude surface, so a session in Cowork or Chat can search your channels and pull in context. This is the Slack connector.

They aren't rivals. A team might run Claude Tag for day-to-day work in channels and keep the connector on so their Cowork sessions can still search Slack history. Here's each one.

Mode 1: Claude Tag, the shared teammate

Claude Tag is the newest and most capable option. It puts Claude into Slack as a member of your workspace: anyone in a channel tags @Claude, hands it a task in plain language, and the whole team watches it work in the thread. It's multiplayer, so everyone shares one Claude, it reads a channel's history so it already knows the work, it learns your rules over time, and it runs asynchronously, including on a schedule.

Claude Tag is built for teams rather than individuals. It's on Team and Enterprise plans, billed on usage rather than per seat, and set up by an admin with access bundles that control which tools it can touch in each channel. Mode 2: The Claude in Slack app, your personal assistant

The Claude in Slack app is the original way to use Claude inside Slack. You install it from the Slack marketplace, then message it directly or @mention it, and it answers, summarises threads and helps in the flow of a conversation. It's tied to your personal Claude account rather than a shared team identity, which makes it a good fit for individuals and smaller setups.

One thing to know if you're on a Team or Enterprise plan: the Claude in Slack app is moving to the new Claude Tag experience. From 3 August 2026, Team and Enterprise customers are switched over to Claude Tag, so on those plans Tag is the way forward and the older personal-assistant behaviour gives way to the shared-teammate model. Mode 3: The Slack connector, context for Cowork and Chat

The Slack connector is the reverse direction. Rather than working inside Slack, it lets Claude reach into your Slack from another surface. You enable it in your Claude account, and then a session in Claude Cowork or Chat can search your workspace: channels, direct messages and shared files.

This is the mode to use when Slack is a source, not the workplace. If you're building a report in Cowork and need what the team agreed in a thread last week, the connector pulls that context in without you copying and pasting. It's one of many connectors that let Claude read from the tools you already use, and it sits alongside, not instead of, the in-Slack options. Which one should you use?

The choice comes down to what you want Claude to do.

If you want a Claude the whole team works with, inside Slack, day to day, use Claude Tag. It's the most capable option and the direction Slack integration is heading for teams.

If you're an individual on a personal plan who wants Claude on hand inside Slack to answer questions and summarise threads, the Claude in Slack app is the fit.

If you mainly work in Cowork or Chat and just need Claude to search Slack for context, turn on the Slack connector and leave the in-Slack tools aside.

Most teams land on a combination: Claude Tag for the shared work in channels, and the connector on in the background so other Claude sessions can still see Slack. The point isn't to pick one and ban the rest, it's to match the mode to the job.
